WordPress is one of the most popular content management systems for websites. It is reported to support around 80% of new sites.
There are two versions:
- WordPress.com, which is web hosted and entirely free for website owners to setup and run. It is ad supported, meaning that WordPress.com make money from ads they place and own on site using this platform.
- WordPress.org, which is downloadable software. This costs users some money in that they have to pay for hosting and a domain name (not to WordPress – whoever they choose to host their site).
Both versions work mostly the same (and there is some connectivity between services) however they are quite different. One is a website you own and run entirely (WordPress.org), whereas the other is a site you are running on a service (WordPress.com).
